WASHINGTON, D.C., March 29, 2023 โ€“ The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) has increased access to international education for more than 1,000 undergraduates and reached $3.25 million in scholarships with its latest awards. With this new cohort, a total of 1,025 students with financial need, including students of color, first-generation college students, and community college students, have benefited from scholarships granted since FEAโ€™s inception in 2010.

This cycle, which awards funding for summer 2023, fall 2023, and the academic year 2023-2024 programs, was also the first cycle in which applicantsโ€™ loans were considered in addition to other factors in order to determine financial need.

Of the 89 scholars awarded this application cycle, 89% of awarded scholars identify as students of color: 1% Middle Eastern or North African, 33% Black/African American, 14% Asian/South Asian, 29% Hispanic/Latinx, and 13% identified as mixed race. Additionally, 62% have never left the United States. Characteristic of FEA scholars, 90% are first-generation college students, and 43% are current or former community college students.

“We are thrilled to welcome the next cohort of FEA Scholars, and to have reached the milestone of supporting over 1000 students in reaching their study abroad goals,โ€ said FEA Executive Director Angela Schaffer.

FEA awards many different types of scholarships, including Named & Dedicated Scholarships that are funded by specific donors; Designated Scholarships that are destination- or demographic-specific; and Access Partner Scholarships. FEA Access Partners engage in the mission of the organization through annual support towards co-branded and allocated scholarships, and they participate on the Access Advisory Board, providing critical leadership-level feedback to FEA.

About the Fund for Education Abroad

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) supports U.S. students with financial need who are traditionally underrepresented in study abroad. Focused on first-generation college, community college, and minoritized students, FEA has awarded more than $3.25 million in FEA scholarships to more than 1,000 scholars since its founding in 2010. The only national non-profit (501(c)(3)) scholarship provider funded exclusively through philanthropy, FEA supports students before, during, and after their study abroad experience with scholarships and programming. FEA is a Guidestar Gold participant and was awarded the 2020 Innovation in Diversity Award by GoAbroad.com, the 2019 Scholarship Provider of the Year Award by the National Scholarship Providers Association, the 2015 Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion in International Education (EDIIE) Award by Diversity Abroad, and the 2015 Innovation in Philanthropy Award by GoAbroad.com.
