Over $5 Million Awarded to More Than 1500 Scholars Since 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C., 9 April 2026 – The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is starting off its 16th year by awarding $360,750 in scholarships and funding to 108 undergraduates planning to study abroad in Summer/Fall 2026 and Academic Year 2026-2027. With this new cohort, FEA has awarded over $5,329,400 to 1552 scholars since FEA’s inception in 2010.

This cycle awards funding for programs taking place between May 2026 and January 2027 as well as Academic Year 2026-27 programs. Finalists were determined by 136 volunteer reviewers and FEA staff who read and scored more than 2,600 applications over a two-month period.

“It’s incredible to kick off our 16th year by reaching two significant milestones,” said FEA Executive Director Angela Schaffer. “As a fully philanthropic organization, it is no small feat to have raised and distributed more than $5 million in scholarship funding and to have supported more than 1500 scholars. Every single dollar invested into FEA signifies a donor’s belief that global education should be accessible and is incredibly impactful. Thank you to the donors, partners, Trustees, volunteers, staff, and FEA Scholars who continue to believe in the work of FEA and the transformative power of international experiences.”

“The opportunity to study abroad is no longer a bonus activity for today’s college students. It is a vital and transformative experience that every student should have,” said Dr. Tonija Hope, FEA Board Chair and Assistant Provost for International Programs and Executive Director of the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center at Howard University. “We are excited to be able to provide resources to make this experience possible for so many who otherwise would not be able to take part. We know that these students will return with new perspectives and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world they live and we are thrilled to have supported these experiences for the last 16 years and look forward to many, many more!”

FEA awards many different types of scholarships, including named & dedicated Scholarships that are funded by specific donors; and Access Partner Scholarships. FEA Access Partners engage in the mission of the organization through annual support towards co-branded and allocated scholarships, and they participate on the Access Advisory Board, providing critical leadership-level feedback to FEA.
