WASHINGTON, D.C., 15 April 2024 โ€“ The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) awarded more than $310,000 in scholarships and funding to 96 undergraduates planning to study abroad in Summer, Fall, and Academic Year 2024-2025. With this new cohort, a total of 1,186 students with financial need, including students of color, first-generation college students, and community college students, have benefited from more than $3.7 million in scholarships granted since FEAโ€™s inception in 2010.

This cycle, which awards funding for programs taking place between May and January 2024, as well as Academic Year 2024-25 programs, was the third cycle in which applicantsโ€™ loans were considered in addition to other factors to determine financial need. The awardees were selected by 117 volunteer reviewers and FEA staff from among 2,770 applicantsโ€“the largest pool in the organizationโ€™s 14-year history.

Of the 96 scholars awarded this application cycle, 87% identify as students of color, 45% identify as LGBTQ+; 22% identify as male, 71% as female, and 7% as genderfluid or non-binary. Characteristic of FEA scholars, 92% are first-generation college students, 44% are current or former community college students, and 57% have never left the United States. Currently studying in universities and colleges in 29 states, the new FEA Scholars will attend programs in over 35 countries across five continents.

“We are grateful to FEAโ€™s supporters, donors, partners and volunteer reviewers who make study abroad scholarships possible, and we celebrate the accomplishments of the current cohort of scholars,โ€ said FEA Executive Director Angela Schaffer. โ€œMoving forward, FEA will continue to prioritize equity and access as we redesign our application to incorporate changes from the FAFSA simplification, and we consider the use of AI by students in their submissions.โ€

โ€œAs someone who benefitted greatly from study abroad, I am especially excited for this cohort of FEA scholars to have a similar transformative experience and work to increase global understanding, give back to their communities, and mentor future generations as the leaders of tomorrow,โ€ said Dr. Amar Rewari, Chair of the FEA Board of Trustees.

FEA awards many different types of scholarships, including Named & Dedicated Scholarships that are funded by specific donors; designated scholarships that are destination- or demographic-specific; and Access Partner Scholarships. FEA Access Partners offer annual co-branded and allocated scholarships, and they participate on the Access Advisory Board.ย
