These flexible scholarships are deferrable through summer 2021, a new offering introduced by FEA to help their new scholars survive the current disruption to higher education caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Including this new cohort, a total of 590 scholars, including minority, first-generation college and community college students, have benefited from over US$2.1 million in scholarships granted since FEAโ€™s inception in 2010.

This year, 88% of awarded scholars are first-generation college students, 94% are minority, and 35% either transferred from or are attending a community college.

โ€œIn finalist interviews over the past two weeks, students overwhelmingly expressed resolve to pursue their study abroad dreams,โ€ said FEA executive director, Jennifer Calvert.

โ€œIn an economic downturn, scholarships are necessary to get students on programs. FEA is the only non-governmentally funded national study abroad scholarship provider.โ€

New this year are four named and dedicated scholarships, including the first-ever funded by an FEA Scholar, the Breakout Scholarship for Community College Students.

Also new are the Eleni Zachariou Memorial Scholarship for Study in Greece, theย Holland America Line Scholarship for Students Studying Travel and Tourism, and theย Kacenga-Cladera Family Rainbow Scholarship.

The American University in Cairoย and theย University of Aucklandย have also funded two newย Access Partner Scholarships.

โ€œWe expect FEA will be a vital resource to the study abroad sector as it emerges from the current global health and economic crisis,โ€ said FEA chair, Anne Krieg.

โ€œWe are particularly grateful to the donors funding six new scholarships, and to all our supporters and partners who have helped us award more than $2 million in scholarships in a decade.โ€

FEA funds scholarships of up to $10,000 for study abroad, enabling students to study across the globe for a minimum of four weeks to a full academic year.

Selected from a pool of over 2,350 applicants, the 2020 FEA Scholars represent 94 higher education institutions across the US.
