Welcome to Tokyo!

Tokyo is the capital of Japan and it is one of the largest and busiest city I’ve ever step foot on. The city is filled with bright neon signs and kind and well-disciplined people. I arrived to the Narita Airport with Dayoon Kim, a Korean friend whom I met at Hong Kong University. I had purchased a Japan Rail Pass before arriving in Japan, but the airport office to claim the pass was closed when I arrived at 8-9PM. So make sure you either prepare some yen for public transportation ahead of time or book an earlier flight. The JP Rail pass can be redeemed at the Narita Airport or Tokyo Station at the Rail Pass Office.

We rode the Express JR train for $14 to the Nipponri Station.

Senso-ji Temple is a beautiful iconic shinto shrine situated in the quiet district of Asakusa. Our hostel was about 5-10 minute walk from there, so we stopped at this famous attraction site first thing in the morning. Then we spent 15-20 minutes walking to the Edo-Tokyo Museum where an English tour guide walked us three the three exhibitions showing the history of Tokyo. Day 4: JR @ Tokyo Station –> Shin-Osaka. I met up with a friend whom I met at my home university to bring me around Osaka. It’s an upbeat urban city similar to Tokyo. We went to a mall, ate pork cutlet over rice (yum!) and then headed to the Osaka Castle.

Day 5: Osaka –> Hokkaido. (See Hokkaido entries)
