The National Theatre of Costa Rica is considered one of the most important landmarks and is a symbol of their cultural heritage. The theatre was built in the late 19th century, back when the population was no more than 18,000 Ticos. The theatre regularly hosts performances of music, dance, and theater. Today, it is recognized as one of the most beautiful examples of the French Renaissance style in Central America. The exterior is based on the famous Palais Garnier in Paris, France, with statues featuring Calderon de la Barca, and Ludwig van Beethoven. The theatreโs interior is recognized for having one of the 10 greatest ceilings in the world. It has a mural titled โAlegorรญa del Cafรฉ y el Bananoโ which was painted by an Italian artist named Aleardo Villa. The mural depicts Costa Rica during the 20th century, when they were at its peak with the coffee and banana industry. Since the artist had not actually visited Costa Rica, there are some inaccuracies in the painting, such as the way they hold the bananas.
The National Theatre of Costa Rica is a must see landmark that holds decades of history. I am hoping to go back to see a performance and enjoy this unique experience. When visiting, I recommend having a guide to learn more about the Theatre and its history!
