Last weekend, I went on my final group excursion with CIEE. We visited the Lompoul desert, stopped in Thies for food, and stayed in Saint-Louis for a day. It was a great last trip because we got to see a little bit more of Senegal. There are a little over two weeks left in the program and this trip was a great way to venture farther out and see other parts of Senegal that we may not have visited earlier.

To make it easier to understand where I was, I will break the post into three parts.

Thies

We did not stay in Thies for very long. We ate and then had some time to walk around. From what I saw of Thies, I liked it a lot more than Dakar.

Leaving Dakar. This was close to Sacre-Coeur 3 which is the neighborhood that I live in.

Yassa poisson. Yassa is a white onion sauce and can be served with either fish or chicken. In this case, I had it with fish.

A street in Thies. I found Thies more beautiful than Dakar. There were lots of trees, shrubbery, and flowers. Thies was calmer than Dakar but without feeling like there was nothing to do.

Lompoul

Visiting the desert was pretty interesting. There wasn’t much to do but walk around or ride the camels. I opted to walk around and helped people take some pretty interesting photos. Other than that, it was quiet and a nice break from the noise of Dakar. It was cool to be able to walk around without any shoes.

Our housing for the night in Lompoul. The tents had mattresses inside them and nothing else. It did get cool at night but we were given blankets to sleep with.

Camels! I did not ride a camel but I did walk around a lot. There were three camels but I only managed to snap two of them.

Saint-Louis

Saint-Louis was quite pretty. We went on a guided tour to learn more about the city’s history and to just see more of the place. Both videos are from the guided bus tour. The first is a view from the big bridge in Saint-Louis. The second video shows the city and some of the streets.
