Getting Out of the City

Studying abroad in a big city like Copenhagen is definitely the dream. Between its gorgeous views and ranking as the happiest city in the world, there is truly no better place I could have chosen for my studies abroad. However, getting out of the city and exploring the more rural parts of Denmark has been one of my favorite parts of this experience so far.

My first explorations of the countryside occurred in Odsherred. I was able to explore Lammefjord, an area of reclaimed sea that is known for producing high quality potatoes and carrots. While there, I was able to hear from local farmers about the pros and cons of reclaimed land, as well as their thoughts on recently passed legislation concerning farming practices. The best part of this experience was spending the evening at Dragsholm Slot, an over 800 year old castle, where we were able to explore the gardens and architecture before enjoying a meal made with Lammefjord’s world renown produce.

Odsherred is also home to one of Denmark’s three UNESCO Global Geoparks. The region boasts a wonderful assortment of geologic features, with rolling hills and plains shaped by glacial activity over fifteen thousand years ago. The coastline gives way to peaceful wetlands and beautiful beaches, where cows frolic along with humans down the coastline. After experiencing this landscape in real life, I understand why the region has tens of thousands of summer homes.

Stevns Klint was another idyllic destination outside of the city. This UNESCO world heritage site is home to miles of chalky cliffs along the Baltic Sea. The cliffs are specifically known for one of their distinct sediment layers, which contains evidence of the meteorite impact responsible for killing at least half of all life on Earth, including the dinosaurs.

While living in Copenhagen has given me the exciting experience of city living, exploring Denmark’s countryside has given me a new perspective on the country. Leaving the city has allowed me to develop an appreciation for Denmark’s agriculture, history, diverse landscapes, and culture, giving me the chance to see a side of the country that I never could have experienced by staying within the city. With this experience under my belt, I definitely plan to travel to more places within Denmark, as well as spend some time outside of the city in other countries when possible.
