Getting back into the school mode

School….??

Classes have started to pick up and professors are already having us take quizzes. Iโ€™m taking 5 classes this semester, and my largest class has about 25 students. Coming from the University of Minnesota, Iโ€™m not use to having such small classes. All my professors already know my name (this wouldnโ€™t be surprising to most people but itโ€™s different for me!) Back home I would have to go to office hours for my professor to know who I am. My favorite classes are cell biology and marketing. My marketing professor is from New Zealand and is very interactive! 50 minutes goes by super fast in that class. This semester is already going by faster than I would like, but Iโ€™m excited to see how my professors continue their classes.

In other news, I spent last weekend in Dubai with other exchange students. We spent most of our day on the beach on Friday. I even got to pet a camel! The weather was absolutely perfect. We have to soak up this weather right now before it reaches above 90 degree weather.

The camel after I told him a really corny joke

A few days ago we went down to the soccer field and played some pickup soccer with a few other girls(Ameerah, Majdal, Carrie, & Gaby). They are all exchange students from the states. It was nice getting out at night and getting in some exercise. Itโ€™s a bit difficult to leave campus sometimes, because we are on the outskirts of Sharjah in University City. Weโ€™ve been taking cabs everyone which adds up. Iโ€™ve taken more cabs in the past 2 weeks than I have in my entire life summed up.

This weekend I was invited to a Somali wedding by 2 Somali students that attend AUS. Iโ€™m excited to see how Somali weddings are held here and compared that to the back home. Iโ€™m sure many of the things will be similar! Somaliโ€™s everywhere hold the same culture at the end of the day. Ready for the weekend and to get some studying done. Until next time!

Sowda Ahmed

*Minnesota Scholarship Marhaba! My name is Sowda Ahmed and I am a 2nd year student at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities majoring in Genetics, Cell Biology and Development with a minor in Management. I am very involved with student groups like the University Honors Student Association, the Somali Student Association, and Be the Match on Campus. Currently, I work in a research lab studying congenital Cytomegalovirus. In the future, I am interested in going to medical school but also continuing research in health disparities. I would like to give back to my community by being advocates for those who are neglected by the healthcare system. I am a first generation college student and the first person in my family who has even dreamed of studying abroad in a different country. Spring of 2016, I will be traveling to the United Arab Emirates to study at the American University of Sharjah. During my trip, I plan on volunteering at an orphanage, learning more about the healthcare system in the UAE and the research that professors are doing at the University.
