Coming from a very low-resource environment, I often lacked leaders in my community that encouraged me to pursue great things. Thus, I want my story to influence younger generations of students to pursue higher education, especially degrees in STEM, and to not let anyone or anything stop them from achieving their greatest ambitions. Ultimately, one of my most important long-term goals is to give my parents a better life. The key to complete this goal is to become a Latino engineering professional and be able to facilitate my parent’s application to finally become U.S. citizens. <i>Top 3 Goals for your time abroad:</i> 1. Create genuine connections with people in and outside my program. 2. Get out of my comfort zone and try new foods, environments, and experiences. 3. Successfully learn concepts of Mechatronics while being immersed in a new culture.

Hello guys, it is my pleasure to create another journal entry to talk about my present experiences during my London study abroad program.

This past weekend my brother and I decided to explore the rich city of Amsterdam. With just an hour flight, we got there that same day and quickly began our expeditions. During my time in Amsterdam, I made an effort to learn about the city’s history, art, and culture. I visited renowned museums like the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House, which provided a deeper understanding of the city’s past and the resilience of its people. Additionally, I enjoyed cycling along the canals, indulging in delicious Dutch cuisine, and exploring the local markets, where I had the chance to interact with locals and discover unique products.

One part of the trip that I loved was how my brother and I spontaneously decided to go to an electronic music festival when we saw a sign promoting it while walking through the streets of Amsterdam. In just one hour we bought the tickets, got ready, and joined thousands of other people in enjoying an afternoon filled with upbeat and joyful beats. This experience was so fun and is one of the most memorable things I did during this weekend.

There are many things that are different from Amsterdam and London. First, London is significantly larger and more sprawling compared to Amsterdam. London’s vast size means it offers a wider range of neighborhoods and attractions, while Amsterdam has a more compact and walkable city center, making it easier to explore on foot or by bike. Furthermore, Amsterdam has a more relaxed and laid-back atmosphere, with a focus on creativity, liberal values, and an appreciation for art and design. It is famous for its coffee shops, where the sale and consumption of cannabis are regulated. London, on the other hand, has a bustling and fast-paced energy, with a rich blend of cultures, a thriving arts scene, and a strong emphasis on finance, commerce, and global influence. FInally, London has an extensive public transportation system, including the iconic London Underground (the Tube), buses, and trains, making it relatively easy to navigate the city. Amsterdam, on the other hand, is known for its bicycle-friendly infrastructure, with an extensive network of bike lanes and a culture that encourages cycling as a primary mode of transportation.

This trip has been more than just a weekend getaway for me. It has been a journey of self-discovery, cultural appreciation, and personal growth. As a first-generation college student and the first American citizen in my family, it has reminded me of the opportunities I’ve been fortunate to have and the importance of embracing new experiences and broadening my horizons.
