A Feeling of Home

<i>"Hello" in your host country's language:</i> Ciao! <i>Home Institution (your U.S. University/College):</i> University of California, Santa Cruz <i>Expected graduation year:</i> 2024 <i>Destination city & country:</i> Bologna, Italy <i>Program provider:</i> UCEAP <i>Major/minor:</i> Latin American & Latinx Studies & Sociology / Language Studies <i>Demographics:</i> Hispanic/Latinx, Multi-Racial, First-Generation College Student, LGBTQ+ <i>Future career aspirations:</i> I want a career that allows me to continue learning about the world around me. As a social science major that involves society as a whole as well as history. Throughout my time in college this field has expanded my knowledge about the world; historically, socially, and culturally. It has helped me understand how it is that we got to this point in time. It's also made me hyperaware of structural issues in our society. In short, I want a career that allows me to explore such things while also helping to be a part of the change we need in this century. <i>Top 3 goals for your time abroad:</i> – Make international friends. – Learn to make pasta from scratch. – To learn something new about myself.

Itโ€™s fascinating how fast one place can come to feel like home. Iโ€™ve been here for four months now. Iโ€™ve built a routine for myself, made friends I hope to keep in contact with, and have gotten to explore this city and find that I know my way around pretty well. I even have a favorite coffee shop I go to study at, a favorite park I go to read, and a favorite restaurant where I know I will always get a satisfying meal. It is this aspect of familiarity that Iโ€™ve come to cultivate that makes this city home. Iโ€™ve noticed that when I come back from trips and set foot in Bologna I get a sense of relief. Itโ€™s not because my trip went wrong or anything of that sort. Itโ€™s because I am able to distinguish where I am; I donโ€™t feel like a tourist wandering the streets here and this brings a sense of comfort.

Most of all, I feel that what makes Bologna feel like home for me is the people. Iโ€™ve met amazing people from all over Italy and the world for that matter. They’re here doing the same thing Iโ€™m doing and for similar reasons. I came to Italy because it had been a dream of mine since high school and I swore to myself that someday I would make it happen for me. Iโ€™ve also always felt like my place in the world is somewhere outside of the US and this was my first taste of what that might look like. The people Iโ€™ve come across have further inspired me to keep doing what Iโ€™m doing, which is traveling the world and learning from these experiences as I do it.

Below are a few pictures of places that have become part of my day-to-day outings. Theyโ€™re places where Iโ€™ve gone to relax, sip on a coffee, encounter friends, meet new people, and where Iโ€™m currently writing this blog from.
