WHERE TO LIVE similar to other large cities, the CBD (Central Business District) is the heart filled with activities and convenience. Students also travel further to attend uni from their homes in Melrose, Upper Hutt, Newtown, and Brooklyn. Kelburn is close to Kelburn Campus but further away from CBD.
BEST EATS NEAR CAMPUS on campus the Hunter Lounge has a very vibrant atmosphere to grab a drink or play pool with friends. They also serve good pizza. Mono Maki the sushi place on campus cuts their price lower in the afternoon for a cheap but filling eat!
FAVORITE LOCAL ACTIVITY Sunday Harbourside market! People with dogs and local vendors with fresh and cooked food!
WHERE TO STUDY library on campus with stunning views. Not as much in the local coffee shops – those are mostly filled with people chatting and relaxing instead.
MUST-TRY LOCAL DISH …. will have to get back to you on this. I have been cooking everyday since the food prices are quite expensive.
BEST PHOTO OP top of Mt. Victoria! Its breathtakingly beautiful, which makes the hike very worthwhile.
BIGGEST FAIL wearing new hiking boots on long hikes – many bloody wounds!
BUY THIS kiwifruits $4 for 8! You can’t get that price anywhere else in the world.
NOT THAT make up – it is extremely expensive about 5 times the American prices! Bring them from home if you wear them!
MOST INTERESTING CLASS Peopling of Polynesia – I’m learning so much about Polynesian history that I never encountered before.
BEST PART OF THE PROGRAM getting to learn about New Zealand and its culture. Kiwis have a laid-back attitude towards life.
UNFORGETTABLE WEEKEND TRIP going to Lake Taupo and feeling like I’m in a fairytale.
BEST LOCAL EVENT NZ Fringe Fest! Summer Shakespeare is a close second … I watched Hamlet and loved it!
BONUS PRO TIP keep an eye out for concession prices for students – whether that is at restaurants, public transportation, or event tickets – you can save a lot of money over time from it!
