As finals week approaches here in Barbados, I was given an awesome opportunity for my culture class to create a final multimedia project. I decided to focus on the beauty of hair in the Caribbean and how my peers are rejecting the societal standards that are imposed on their self-expression. As someone who has never had to edit large amounts of content, this project was definitely a challenge. Despite this, it was a privilege to interview my classmates and friends and challenge myself on the content I have learned. I hope you all enjoy it if you watch the presentation. P.S. I know finals weeks come with many stressors but I hope that everyone studying abroad during this finals season will continue to persevere. Donโt forget to prioritize your sleep, exercise, and eating. You got this and I am rooting for you!
“Through the various authors I have been introduced to in CLTR 1010 and the creators of the LOOKA Barbados Museum Exhibit, I have created a project that I am incredibly passionate about and thankful for. This multimedia presentation has not only allowed me the privilege to reflect upon the ways my peers express themselves through their hair but also on how I do so in my everyday life. I am evermore appreciative of the knowledge I hold about Black pride, style, and aesthetics. I also walk away with a new comprehension of the interworkings of colonialism both historically and currently in the Caribbean. I hope that when people view my project they can question what their hair means to them and if/how the colonial gaze affects them personally. All the more, I hope they invest themselves in the validity that your hair is your crown.โ
