My vision for the future is clear and conscious, to the point that I have been having trouble questioning the resolve for multiple years now. I plan out my career and write details regarding what is needed to achieve specific goals to reach the destination. What is the destination since that is a vague way of proclaiming reaching the destination to fulfill your career? According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a career is “the job or series of jobs that you do during your working life, especially if you continue to get better jobs and earn more money.” I disagree with how they defined career, but it may be for someone to be truthful to the conviction. However, as for me, I will define a career not as a way to get a better job or earn more money but as a career that should be associated with passion, dignity, and conviction to improve the world. “To leave the world a little better than you found it. That’s the best a man can ever do – Paul Auster.” We have a short period of time within this world, so why not leave the world a little better for those who will come after us. We have to be famous or influential, but all of us can change a person or environment one thing at a time. Society is so entrapped in measuring a career with position/influence, salary, and class. Subsequently, it is detrimental to live up to such a career within society. One ought to be pressured by such an expectation put by the community, friends, and family, and I am one of those individuals.
My career has been laid out since the start of college, which is to become an ambassador of the United States to Burma (Myanmar) or any other place to foster democracy and build institutions within the 21st century. A career is an end goal where you will be twenty to forty years from now. However one career could be short-term or long-term, but either of those two could be achieved differently. A short-term goal could become a long-term goal and vice versa; achieving a long-term goal within a short period is also possible. For me, the next step is to decide how I want to approach my career goal; either a master’s in public policy with a concentration in economics or a law degree to practice international law. Subsequently, I am applying for a fellowship grant to support my education and, most importantly, to apply for the master’s program – to be accepted into a program in public policy with a concentration in economics.
