Check out below answers to the most common questions about our scholarships and application. If your answer is not answered below, feel free to email us!
When is the application open?
We have two application cycles per year. The application for Summer/Fall programs is typically open from November to early February. The application for Winter/Spring programs is typically open from late July to mid-September. Find more information about the current application status on our Apply page.
How many applicants receive FEA scholarships each cycle?
FEA awards as many scholarships as possible based on available funding each cycle. In recent cycles, FEA has awarded 3-4% of applicants on average. We strongly encourage all applicants to consider pursuing other sources of funding in addition to applying for FEA. Check out our Additional Resources page for some ideas to get you started.
Am I eligible for an FEA scholarship? Can exceptions be made for the eligibility requirements?
Please check our eligibility page. If you do not fit these qualifications, you are not eligible for an FEA scholarship.ย To ensure our process remains fair, we do not make any exceptions to these requirements. Submitted applications found to be ineligible will not be considered for review.
I am planning to study abroad for a full academic year (fall and spring). When should I apply?
Applicants planning to study abroad for a full academic year are welcome to apply during our Summer/Fall application cycle.
What is in the application?

- Study Abroad Information: Questions about your study abroad plans.

What are the essay questions?
- Why have you chosen your intended study abroad program? Please describe any unique elements of your program that influenced your choice and share what you hope will be most empowering to you about your experience. (300 words maximum)
- What should we know about you that is not conveyed elsewhere in your application? Please be specific. This is your opportunity to tell us why you are a deserving candidate and what makes you different from other applicants. (600 words maximum)
I missed the deadline. Can I still submit my application?
No. We are unable to grant any individual extensions, no matter the reason.
I am pursuing a full degree abroad. Can you help fund my education?
We are not able to provide funding for full degree programs. We can only award scholarships to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or DACA recipients who are attending a U.S institution of higher education and are pursuing a study abroad program outside of the U.S. as part of their undergraduate degree.
I submitted my application. When will I hear back about a decision?
Our review process takes approximately 8 to 9 weeks once the application has closed. If you submitted an application for the Summer/Fall application cycle, you can expect to hear back in April. If you submitted an application for the Winter/Spring application cycle, you can expect to hear back in November. Decision notifications are sent to the email address you provided in your application. If you have not heard back within the anticipated time frame, please check your spam folder.
I submitted an application and did not receive a scholarship. Can I get feedback on my application?
Unfortunately, due to the number of inquiries we receive, we are unable to provide feedback on individual applications. We are a philanthropic organization and our funding is limited. In many cases strong applications are denied simply because we do not have more funds to award in a given application cycle.
