Itโ€™s only been a few days in Mumbai and Iโ€™m in love. This city has so much to offer. I have seen, tasted, and done so many different things that Iโ€™m not sure where to begin. There are only four of us in this CIEE program. This is because we are only the fourth batch of students to participate in this new CIEE International Business and Culture program. Each of us are from different parts of the State with completely different backgrounds and personalities, so this will definitely be an interesting semester to say the least.

Mumbai is a city filled with exotic smells flowing from near by street food carts and abundance of noise made by busy local individuals reflecting the cities prosperous growth in economy. This city also has many contradictions. For every โ€œseven star hotelโ€ there is a slum right next to it. The climate here is warm and humid, yet people here drink multiple cups of burning hot Chai throughout the day. Life here seems to be fluid and unstructured for many.

Just last night we visited Colaba, which is located in the southern part of Mumbai. The architecture in Colaba is breathtaking. The British architecture along with the Indian twist makes me feel as if Iโ€™m in a timeless place. Taking a stroll down the streets of Colaba I didnโ€™t feel like I was in India. There werenโ€™t any trash on the streets, no beggars, and best of all no distinct smell. The air was cool and the only noise came from the Arabian Sea as waves crashed against the rocks near by.

I canโ€™t help but smile knowing that my journey has just started. Although itโ€™s only been a couple of days, I can already tell that Mumbai is a place I can see myself in the future. Iโ€™m going to challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone everyday and avoid stressing about dates and deadlines like I would back in the States. In these next four months Iโ€™m going to venture though Mumbai with an open heart and an open mind.

Tenzing Atsentsang

Hello! My name is Tenzing Rapden Atsentsang. Iโ€™m currently a third year undergrad studying Finance and International Business Communications here at the University of Oregon. Currently Iโ€™m a Client Associate Intern at Merrill Lynch. Working for one the worldโ€™s largest Fortune 500 companies is somewhat intimidating, but this internship has helped me shape what I want to do in the future. I am a blend of two cultures, and as a Tibetan-American, my past experience as a Tibetan refugee makes me sensitive to the struggles of all people yearning for freedom. I am committed to doing my part to build bridges of cross-cultural understanding and collaboration through international business. In the fall of 2013, Iโ€™ll be attending an International Business & Culture semester provided through CIEE, located in Mumbai, India โ€“ known as the โ€œcity of dreams.โ€ Iโ€™ll be studying alongside Indiaโ€™s top MBA level students in one of Indiaโ€™s prestigious, private business schools known as Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research. I hope though my time in India, to understand the Indian culture and market necessities and to help build economically responsible communities and humane businesses throughout India. I canโ€™t begin to tell you how excited I am about this opportunity. It still hasnโ€™t hit me yet; maybe itโ€™ll all sink in when Iโ€™m sitting on the plane. Iโ€™ll let you know when it doesโ€ฆ
