FEA Alumni Council Member
Joanne Yao received a $10,000 scholarship to study in Edinburgh, Scotland during the 2017-2018 academic year with the University of Maryland Exchange program. At the University of Edinburgh, Joanne studied numerous biology courses as well as history of medicine/science courses. Interested in medicine, she eagerly participated in a Veterinary experience program, where she shadowed veterinarians in small animal, exotic animal, and farm animal clinics. The experience confirmed that she will continue to pursue her passion in human medicine. She was also able to visit numerous other universities in the UK to attend undergraduate medical conferences, where she heard from physicians in different fields. Life in Edinburgh was exceptionally exciting because there are so many festivals and events going on. She once crazily waited outside the Edinburgh castle in freezing cold weather to meet Prince Harry.
Currently, Joanne is a senior at University of Maryland and will be graduating in Spring 2019. Upon graduation, she will be applying to medical schools during her gap year. Since the dream come true year abroad, she has been advocating for others to study abroad and to travel more.
