University of Auckland
As Director International, Brett Berquist leads the international strategy and operations at the University of Auckland after working in Europe, Asia, and the US as academic staff and administrator leading international recruitment strategy, transnational education, ESL provision, campus-wide internationalization strategy, and credit mobility.
He launched the first US Study Abroad Doctoral Fellowship, served as co-PI on GLEO, a research project on graduate education abroad, and led a Big 10 benchmarking project that advanced the field’s understanding of non-credit education abroad.
As a first-generation student himself, he has sought to increase access to under-represented students by collaborating with Diversity Abroad, serving on the Forum Council, study abroad provider advisory boards, and co-chairing the content committee for the Global Internship Conference. Having participated in IIE’s think tank leading to the Generation Study Abroad initiative, Brett brought the first New Zealand university into the movement and launched a Gen SA scholarship program to NZ, where we now have an emerging national strategy for learning abroad as well as an indigenous learning abroad strategy. He holds degrees in music, French, and linguistics. His most recent publication is Berquist, B., Moore, K., & Milano, J. (Eds.). (2018). International internships: Mission, methods & models, a collection of papers from the Global Internship Conference . Boston, MA: Academic Internship Council. 213
