Anna is FEA’s 2014-2015 Hiliary Echo Douglas Scholar.

Hello! My name is Anna Balmilero and I am from Lawrence, Kansas. I am currently attending the University of Kansas and am double majoring in Global & International Studies and East Asian Languages and Cultures, with a minor in Sociology. In my free time I am a thrifting junkie, and love to eat a good meal and explore my little niche of the world with friends. I am a first generation college student in my family and the first to study abroad, so earning a FEA scholarship to study abroad has really meant a lot. My interest in learning about new cultures really stems from my mixed heritage, I am half Filipino and half Caucasian, as I have been exposed a mix of cultures my whole life, and cannot wait to experience a new one next year!

Next year I am going to be studying abroad at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. I chose to study at Yonsei because I will have the opportunity to be completely immersed in Korean culture, continue my Korean language education, and take specialized content courses that are not available here at home. I am especially excited to be able to take classes on North Korean and South Korean relations, foreign policy, and possible reunification. The prospect of being able to eat yummy food everyday is also a major plus. I am super excited for my new adventure in South Korea next year!
